If you are going public those waiting times can be very long indeed. This is the tale of how a sailing excursion between two friends turned into reduced waiting times for dermatology patients and a big win at the Irish Health Care Awards.

Skin cancer rates increase ‘significantly’ among middle-aged and older adults
A study shows a massive increase in rates among men and women but "stabilising" rates among those under 34. Skin cancer rates have rocketed in the past few decades, according to a new study. The number of cases among men has gone up five-fold and the number of cases in women have risen by 250%, driven by increases in those aged 35 and over.

DermView envisions the digital future of dermatology
In talks to raise €2m, Irish medtech DermView is on a mission to revolutionise dermatology treatment, beginning with expansion in the UK and Ireland. Not many people out there realise it, but skin issues make up almost 20pc of a typical GP’s workload. And with only 57 dermatologists in the country, according to DermView co-founder Eoin O’Reilly, it is not surprising that the Irish waiting list to see dermatologists currently stands at 46,500 people.

Grace, 26, Celbridge, acne treatment

Pat, 70, Dublin, referral for facial discolouration
On Monday, August 24, Pat Conway of Coolkill, Sandyford, Dublin 18, was referred by his GP to AllView Healthcare (previously DermView) to check out some facial discolouration. Two days later, Pat (70) was contacted by AllView Healthcare, which totally shocked him it was so quick.

Neil, 73, Kilkenny, referral for a facial growth
On July 29, a GP found a facial growth on Neil Curtis of Piltown, Kilkenny, and referred him to a consultant in his regional hospital. Tired of waiting, Neil, aged 73, contacted AllView Healthcare (previously DermView) and got an appointment three days later to go to his local clinic for a scan on August 25.
